Annular Solar Eclipse - Kenya/Tanzania

Itinerary - Departing Monday 11th Jan 2010

*THIS TRIP IS NOW FULL *

We have created a varied choice of outstanding safari options where you can witness the eclipse and enjoy the sights and spectacular wildlife of East Africa.

The base for the eclipse is the world famous Masai Mara Game Reserve, home to the ‘Big Five’ (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, rhino) and much more. Longer safaris include Tanzania’s Serengeti and Ngogongoro Crater, Northern Kenya’s Samburu game park and a safari specially designed for birdwatchers. Beach extensions on Kenya’s Mombasa coast or the mystical ‘Spice Island’ of Zanzibar are also available.

This will be an exceptionally long Annular Eclipse therefore the ring of sunlight (the annulus) around the disk of the moon will be quite bright. Because of this our expedition will be based at the edge of the eclipse track, where the most interesting effects can be observed. More about observing an annular eclipse click here

Our Expert

Dr Nick Hewitt is well known among astronomical societies, particularly for his experience and expertise in deep sky astronomy. As a former president of the British Astronomical Association, he is able to communicate his enthusiasm for the subject to a wide audience at all levels of interest and knowledge. On this trip we particularly look forward to sharing his knowledge of the southern sky, with views of objects that are not visible from our latitude. The very dark sites in the game parks will add a special element to Nick’s night presentations, with his expert knowledge of this region of the sky.
